Better known as the Salmon Pink Birdeater, this iconic New World species is famous for its impressive adult size, rapid growth and bold feeding response. Despite its intimidating appearance, it is a hardy and rewarding species that has become a favourite among tarantula enthusiasts worldwide.

Native Habitat

Lasiodora parahybana is native to the tropical forests of eastern Brazil, particularly within the state of Paraíba, from which it takes its scientific name.

This species inhabits warm, humid environments where it shelters beneath fallen logs, rocks and dense vegetation. Juveniles often make use of shallow burrows for protection, while larger individuals spend more time occupying natural retreats on or just below the forest floor.

Although capable of digging, adult Lasiodora parahybana is primarily a terrestrial species. Instead of constructing deep tunnel systems, it relies on natural cover and thick vegetation to remain concealed during the day before emerging to hunt at night.

Care Information

Enclosure

House slings in a secure enclosure with good floor space and adequate ventilation. As they grow, provide progressively larger enclosures with plenty of room to move.

Substrate

Use a deep layer of coco fibre, organic topsoil or a suitable bioactive substrate. Although adults rarely burrow extensively, juveniles often appreciate extra substrate depth for security.

Temperature & Humidity

Maintain temperatures between 20°C and 26°C. Keep part of the substrate slightly moist while allowing the upper layers to dry between watering. Good airflow helps prevent stagnant conditions.

Feeding

Offer appropriately sized prey such as fruit flies, micro crickets or small roach nymphs. This species usually displays an enthusiastic feeding response and grows rapidly when fed a varied diet.

Temperament

Although generally considered calmer, Lasiodora parahybana can become defensive when disturbed. It readily flicks urticating hairs and may adopt a threat posture if it feels cornered. They also regularly mistake any movement as food.

Handling

Handling is not recommended. Large individuals are powerful animals, and a fall can cause serious injury. Observing their natural behaviour inside the enclosure is always the safest option.

Growth & Adult Size

One of the biggest attractions of Lasiodora parahybana is its exceptional growth rate. Under suitable conditions, spiderlings grow rapidly and eventually develop into truly impressive adults.

Females can exceed 25 cm (10 inches) in leg span, making them one of the largest tarantula species available in the hobby. Males mature sooner than females and have a significantly shorter adult lifespan.

Breeding Information

Lasiodora parahybana is an oviparous species. Following a successful pairing, females produce a large egg sac that they guard carefully inside their retreat.

Healthy females can produce hundreds to well over one thousand spiderlings in a single egg sac, making this one of the most prolific tarantula species in captivity.

The spiderlings establish quickly and generally grow at an impressive rate when provided with appropriate temperatures and regular feeding.
