Description
Scientific Name: Lissachatina fulica
Morph: Rodatzi
Common Name: Giant African Land Snail
Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi is an attractive colour form of the Giant African Land Snail, recognised by its pale golden to yellowish shell and naturally dark body. Unlike the standard wild-type form, Rodatzi lacks the strong heavy shell banding normally associated with Lissachatina fulica.
These large terrestrial snails are active, inquisitive and straightforward to maintain once their basic requirements are met. Their impressive size, contrasting dark body and warm golden shell make Rodatzi a particularly attractive form for both new and experienced snail keepers.
Native Habitat
Lissachatina fulica originates from East Africa, where it inhabits warm environments with access to humid soil, vegetation and sheltered areas. The species has since established populations across many tropical and subtropical regions.
They spend daylight hours beneath vegetation, leaf litter or within the soil when conditions become dry. Activity usually increases during humid periods and after rainfall, particularly during the evening and overnight.
The Rodatzi colour form has the same environmental requirements as other Lissachatina fulica morphs.
Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi Care Information
Adult Shell Size: Commonly around 10–15 cm, although size varies
Temperature: Around 21–26°C
Humidity: Approximately 70–90%
Diet: Primarily herbivorous and detritivorous
Difficulty: Easy
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and burrowing
A secure plastic or glass enclosure works well for Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi. Provide plenty of floor space, good ventilation and enough substrate for the snail to bury itself completely.
These snails can climb extremely well, including across smooth surfaces and enclosure lids. Always use a secure lid because a determined Giant African Land Snail can turn a poorly fitted enclosure into an unexpectedly slow prison break.
Substrate
Provide a deep layer of soft, moisture-retentive substrate. Organic topsoil, coco coir or a suitable mixture of both can work well, provided the material contains no pesticides, fertilisers or other harmful additives.
The substrate should remain loose enough for easy burrowing and deep enough for the snail to completely cover itself. Adults will usually appreciate considerably deeper substrate than small juveniles.
Avoid decorative stones, ceramic hides or other hard objects beneath climbing areas. A snail falling from the enclosure roof can damage its shell if it lands on a hard surface.
Temperature and Humidity
Keep the enclosure warm and consistently humid. Temperatures around 21–26°C suit Lissachatina fulica, while cooler conditions can reduce activity and growth.
Maintain the substrate slightly moist without turning it into mud. Light misting helps maintain humidity and gives the snails droplets to drink from surfaces.
Always provide ventilation alongside humidity. A damp enclosure should still receive fresh airflow rather than becoming permanently stagnant.
Feeding Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi
Offer a varied diet containing plenty of fresh vegetables and leafy foods. Suitable choices include courgette, sweet potato, squash, carrot, mushrooms and a range of leafy greens.
Fruit can provide additional variety, although vegetables should make up the majority of the fresh diet. Rotating foods gives the snails access to a broader range of nutrients than repeatedly feeding one favourite item.
Remove uneaten fresh foods before they spoil heavily. Always wash produce thoroughly before offering it.
Calcium
A constant source of calcium is essential for healthy shell development.
Natural cuttlefish bone works particularly well because the snail can regulate its own intake. Keep a piece available inside the enclosure at all times and replace it as the snail consumes it.
Growing juveniles can use surprisingly large amounts of calcium. Adults also require continued access for shell maintenance and egg production.
Avoid forcing powdered calcium directly onto every meal. Providing a separate calcium source allows the snail to consume it when required.
Behaviour
Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi often becomes most active during the evening, overnight and after misting. Individuals may spend daylight hours resting beneath cover or partly buried in the substrate.
They readily climb enclosure walls, branches and cork surfaces while exploring. Their tentacles continually investigate their surroundings, making them surprisingly engaging animals to observe.
Periods of reduced activity can occur if conditions become too cool or dry. Correcting temperature and moisture usually encourages normal activity again.
The Rodatzi Colour Form
The Rodatzi morph differs mainly through its shell pigmentation. Instead of the strongly banded brown shell seen in typical Lissachatina fulica, Rodatzi develops a cleaner golden, yellow or horn-coloured shell.
The body retains the normal dark pigmentation. This distinguishes Rodatzi from pale-bodied forms such as Jadatzi, which combine a light shell with a pale or unpigmented body.
Colour intensity can vary between individuals and may change slightly as the shell grows. Young snails can therefore look different as fresh shell growth develops.
Breeding Information
Lissachatina fulica are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning each mature snail possesses both male and female reproductive organs. However, reproduction normally follows mating between two compatible individuals, and snails can store sperm after mating.
A mature snail can produce large clutches of eggs within the substrate. For this reason, regularly check the enclosure if you keep mature animals together.
The eggs are usually buried, so gently inspect the substrate during routine maintenance. Never release unwanted eggs, juveniles or adults outdoors.
Managing Eggs and Young
If you intend to breed Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi, provide deep, loose substrate so females can bury their eggs naturally. Keep incubation conditions warm and moist without saturating the soil.
Young snails require the same basic conditions as adults but need especially reliable access to calcium. They grow quickly when given warmth, moisture and a varied diet.
Only hatch the number of eggs you can responsibly house or rehome. This species can reproduce very effectively, so a single successful clutch can transform a pleasantly occupied enclosure into a snail metropolis rather quickly.
Enclosure Maintenance
Spot-clean uneaten food and waste regularly while keeping the substrate moist and loose. Complete substrate replacements are rarely necessary unless contamination or another problem develops.
Avoid using household cleaning chemicals inside the enclosure. Warm water and dedicated equipment work well for routine cleaning.
Check the substrate regularly for eggs when keeping sexually mature snails. Also inspect the lid and ventilation points because these strong climbers will investigate almost every possible exit.
Handling
Giant African Land Snails can tolerate gentle occasional handling. Wet clean hands before touching the snail to reduce the risk of damaging its delicate skin.
Never pull a snail directly from a surface while it has a strong grip. Instead, gently encourage it to release or slide a damp finger beneath the front of the foot.
Always wash your hands after handling the snail, its food or enclosure materials. Good hygiene protects both the keeper and the animal.
Responsible Keeping
Lissachatina fulica is highly adaptable and has become invasive in many parts of the world. Captive animals, unwanted young and eggs should therefore never be released outdoors.
Keep the enclosure secure and manage breeding responsibly. This is particularly important for such a prolific non-native species.
Responsible captive keeping allows these remarkable snails to remain enjoyable animals without creating unnecessary environmental risk.
Captive-Bred Details
Our Lissachatina fulica Rodatzi come from captive-bred populations. Captive breeding allows us to maintain healthy colour lines while avoiding unnecessary reliance on wild-collected animals.
Their golden shell, contrasting dark body and impressive adult size make Rodatzi one of the most attractive Lissachatina fulica forms. With deep substrate, constant calcium, warmth and a varied diet, they make fascinating long-term additions to an invertebrate collection.
