Description
Coco Coir Block – Makes Approximately 6L
Our Coco Coir Blocks are a compact and convenient substrate option for plants, terrariums and animal enclosures. Each dry block expands to approximately 6 litres when hydrated, making storage easy while still providing plenty of usable material.
Coco coir holds moisture well and remains light once expanded. Therefore, it works well on its own for suitable applications or as part of a custom substrate blend. however it should never be used for millipedes, it can lead to compaction and we don’t want to put our little buddies through that.
It can help maintain humidity in tropical enclosures while also providing a soft digging medium for many invertebrates. In addition, plant growers can use it to improve moisture retention, structure and aeration within growing mixes.
Suitable For
Coco coir works well across a wide range of uses, including:
- Invertebrate enclosures
- Reptile and amphibian setups
- Tropical terrariums
- Bioactive enclosures
- Houseplants
- Terrarium plants
- Propagation
- Custom substrate mixes
It can also form part of isopod substrates. However, these animals still require nutritious materials such as leaf litter and rotten hardwood.
How to Use
Place the compressed block into a suitable container and gradually add water.
Allow the block to absorb the moisture and expand. Once softened, break it apart by hand and fluff the fibres until you reach an even texture.
Each block produces approximately 6 litres of hydrated coco coir.
You can use the expanded coir as it is or mix it with other substrate materials. For animal enclosures, it combines well with topsoil, sand, leaf litter and decomposed hardwood.
For plants, it can form part of a growing mix alongside bark, compost, perlite or similar materials.
Benefits
Coco coir offers several useful benefits for both plant growers and animal keepers.
It holds moisture effectively, which can help maintain humid conditions within tropical setups. At the same time, its fibrous texture helps keep the substrate light and workable.
The compressed blocks also take up very little storage space before use. This makes them particularly convenient for keepers who regularly prepare fresh enclosures or custom substrate blends.
Coco coir contains very little natural nutrition. Therefore, plants grown mainly in coir will require suitable nutrients, while detritivorous invertebrates still need leaf litter and decomposed wood as food sources.
Our Coco Coir Blocks provide a simple, versatile and space-saving substrate option for a wide range of plant and animal uses.
