Overview

Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’ is a beautiful tropical climbing plant known for its narrow, blue-green leaves and subtle metallic sheen. The foliage can appear green, silver, teal or blue depending on the lighting and growing conditions.

Young plants produce long, elegant leaves without splits. However, mature plants can develop much larger foliage with dramatic fenestrations when given enough light and a suitable climbing surface.

Cebu Blue grows quickly and adapts well to both houseplant collections and warm, humid terrariums. Its climbing and trailing growth also makes it excellent for adding natural cover to bioactive setups.

Native Habitat

Epipremnum pinnatum occurs naturally throughout tropical parts of Asia and the western Pacific. ‘Cebu Blue’ takes its name from Cebu in the Philippines.

In its natural environment, the plant grows in warm and humid forests. It uses aerial roots to climb trees and other rough surfaces towards stronger light.

This climbing habit plays an important role in mature leaf development. Plants allowed to climb often produce larger leaves than specimens left to trail.

Care

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for the strongest growth and best foliage colour.

Cebu Blue can tolerate lower light levels, although growth may become slower and leaves may remain smaller. Avoid prolonged harsh sunlight because strong direct sun can scorch the foliage.

Temperature

Temperatures between around 18–28°C work well.

Warm and stable conditions encourage faster growth. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures or strong draughts.

Humidity

Moderate to high humidity suits Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’.

Established plants cope well with normal household humidity. However, higher humidity can encourage stronger aerial roots and more vigorous climbing growth.

This makes Cebu Blue particularly well suited to tropical terrariums and humid bioactive displays.

Watering

Keep the substrate lightly moist while allowing the upper layer to begin drying between watering.

Avoid permanently saturated soil. Waterlogged conditions reduce oxygen around the roots and can eventually cause root problems.

Substrate

Use a loose, well-draining substrate with plenty of organic material.

A chunky tropical plant mix containing bark and other airy components works particularly well. The roots appreciate moisture but also benefit from good airflow.

When planting directly into a terrarium, avoid burying the stem too deeply.

Growth and Climbing

Cebu Blue naturally grows as a climbing vine.

It can trail from pots and raised planting areas, but giving it something to climb usually produces stronger and more mature growth. Cork bark, branches, moss poles and textured terrarium backgrounds all make excellent supports.

The aerial roots attach to rough surfaces as the plant climbs. With suitable conditions and maturity, the leaves can become significantly larger and may develop natural splits.

Regular pruning keeps the plant manageable in smaller terrariums. Pruning also encourages branching and can create a fuller display.

Terrarium and Bioactive Use

Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’ works particularly well in larger tropical terrariums and naturalistic enclosures.

Its vines can climb cork, branches and backgrounds, creating dense foliage and additional structure. The leaves also provide cover and climbing surfaces for many arboreal invertebrates.

However, Cebu Blue grows quickly under warm and humid conditions. Smaller setups may therefore need regular pruning.

This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, so it should not be used as a food plant for animals that actively consume vegetation.

Propagation

Cebu Blue propagates easily from stem cuttings.

Each cutting needs at least one healthy node. Roots and new growth emerge from these nodes under suitable conditions.

Cuttings can root in water, moist moss or directly in a suitable growing medium. Warm temperatures and good humidity usually encourage rapid root development.

Once the cutting develops a healthy root system, it can move into its permanent pot or terrarium.

Carefully snip around the mesh and peel it away from the root ball. Then plant the Cebu Blue directly into fresh substrate and water it gently.
